Aaaaand FINALLY, self-love. It is the body guard of self-image. It surrounds your self-worth, self-esteem, and self-respect, binds them up together into a nice little self-image package; hopefully a healthy one. Self-love has been taught for centuries by different spiritual influences and leaders. It has been known as the "cure all" for life and pain, to love thyself and love others. I can actually agree but this is only half of the full message. Jesus tells us in Matthew 22:37, "Love God with all your heart, your soul, your strength, and your mind." This is the first and greatest commandment, and the second being, "Love your neighbor as yourself." Matthew 22:39
God is love! And He wants us to love ourselves too. If we don't love us, who will? Better question, who can?! It would be unfair and tough for others to try loving you if you hate yourself. Without self-love, we form a wall that blocks receiving love and giving it. Only YOU are responsible for loving yourself. We often like to put the blame and responsibility on others, and we end up depressed and hopeless, Self- love is your happiness! No one can take that from you nor can they give it to you. Your love for yourself should protect you from everything out to steal your worth, damage your esteem, and rob you of respect. Self-love says, "I love myself enough to say NO or to walk away from this."
Did I love myself when I begged him to stay? "Why don't you stay here with me? I thought you loved me? PLEASE DON'T GO! I NEED YOU!!!", were my words when he said he was leaving. Did I hate myself? Did I really just beg a man to stay and love me? Did I have any special regard and respect for myself in this moment of weakness and abandon? I should've had love for MYSELF...enough to not beg for it. In that desperate moment, I failed to realize I had a Creator who loved me when I had hatred for myself. He loved me before I was conceived. He loved my hurting heart back into good health, and He laid the foundation and steps to create in me a positive self-image.
My dear sisters, many of us do not love ourselves. There's so much proof that we don't. We chase men and friends for love and happiness that we owe to ourselves. Won't you see yourself as God sees you? He is love, and that immeasurable love is measured back to you daily. When you wake up, God is love, when you breathe, God is love, you are blessed because God is love. Experience the love of God above anyone and anything else, and you will see yourself as He does. You are LOVED!
